Personal lettering, professional thought leadership, community resources

Included in the commission was a request for corresponding table numbers.
I sent these all off to the bride today. Can't wait to see this whole suite set up in a few weeks.
The stack on the left is of finished place cards. The stack on the right is all the ones I screwed up - some misspellings, a lot of misshapen letters, couple ink smudges and blobs, some spacing issues. Somewhat defeating. But you just have to keep going until you've got it. 230 names later. Done.
I'm happy with the results. And I hope the bride and groom will be as well.
Working on the first wedding hand lettering since my own wedding, creating placecards. Very excited, and trying not to go too overboard perfecting each one before moving on to the next.
A very simple, legible design for what will be a very classic, traditional wedding next month.
Another Valentine's Day. A time to reflect on our partnerships in love. This morning, as my littlest favorite left for daycare, he gave me a kiss and said "T'amo, mama" as he often does. But then he turned back and said, "more t'amo", looking for second goodbye kiss. A Happy Valentine's Day, indeed.
Not the opposite of "speak softly", but an addition to. Sometimes you can't be confined by skirting boundaries appropriately, and it is better to cast your net wide. Use caps, not just script. A Sharpie and a nib.
This last week, all of my creative energy has been poured into the new website design for the Prairie Gold Rush, an antique tractor magazine that my parents publish. The last site I designed for them was in html in 2006 or so, and it was really showing its age. I'm pretty proud of this new site, which is still super functional, and hopefully draws even more attention to their history preservation.
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., some of my favorite words of his.
I don't like to make New Year's resolutions...they seem so trite. And the word resolution seems so final. I prefer to arbitrarily set goals, and this year that happened to coincide with the beginning of 2014.
First, vitamins. As a vegetarian, I don't get enough B vitamins. I'd like to remedy that.
Second, yoga. I take a weekly class at Tula with Nathan, but I'd like to rededicate myself (as I am a far cry from the 2 hours a day I used to do when training to be a teacher). Somehow incorporating this into my daily routine, and exploring more classes outside my house.
Third, create. This blog is a step in that direction. But even if I'm not lettering everyday, creating something everyday would be ideal - knitting, sewing, writing, baking, etc. Just pinning to Pinterest is not enough.
After sending out our yearly holiday card - this year in the form of a hand-lettered newsletter - my friends and family encouraged me to do something with my design "hobby". This newly designed website is the result. I'll catalog what I'm working on, in an effort to hold myself accountable to continue producing work. Likely most of it will come in the form of lettering practice, but I'll also document my party-planning and crafting projects for posterity.
Thanks for your encouragement - here we go!
